West Midlands Police Force are carrying weapons to 60% more incidents compared to last year.

Armed officers in the West Midlands Police were deployed on 672 more operations in the year ending March 2017 than in the year ending March 2016.

Overall they were 1,794 operations in 2017, the highest amount of operations since the statistics started being released in 2009.

The number of police officers trained as armed officer also increased by almost half since 2016.

An armed officer is any officer which is trained to be operationally deployed with a firearm. They will frequently also carryout normal officer duties.

There are 231 armed officers in the West Midlands Police Force, the highest there have been since statistics started being released.

By looking at the number of armed operations, compared to the number of armed officers, you can get an idea of the amount of strain a force is under.

The West Midlands Police Force is under the most strain in the country — having 7.8 operations per officer in the year, compared to the average across England and Wales of 2.5 operations per officer.

Of the armed police operations by West Midlands Police, 89% were accompanied with armed response vehicles.
Across the UK armed police operations used an armed response vehicle in 84% of operations in 2017.

Between 2009 and 2016 there was a downward trend in the number of police operations involving firearms - the figure for 2017 broke this trend.

The number of armed police operations increased across the country with 1,056 more operations than in 2016, bringing the total to 15,705 operations in 2017.

The increase in operations is supported by the 7% increase in the number of armed officers, with 15,705 armed officers across England and Wales in 2017.

However, despite the increase in armed officers, there are still 32% fewer officers than there were 2009, when there were 23,181 armed officers.

This figure reflects the drop in the total number of police officers, as the actual percentage of police officers trained as armed officers is 5% — the highest it has been since the figures were published in 2009.

The number of incidents in which firearms were discharged was also the highest it has been since figures were published in 2009, with a total of 10 incidents in England and Wales. This figure includes incidents like the terror attack in Westminster in March 2017.
