Paradigmatic Coaching .. an alternative to counselling
Paradigmatic Coaching
‘We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them’ Albert Einstein
Paradigmatic Coaching is a ‘first stage intervention’ coaching approach to help clients deal more effectively with issues which are having negative effects on their lives. It was developed by Key2 Empowerment partners, two of whom are recently retired Police Firearms Instructors.
The Paradigmatic Coaching model recognises two types of reality in people’s lives. They are Common Realities and Personal Realities. Common Realities are those realities that we ‘share’ or ‘experience’ with other people. Personal Realities are those which are ‘real’ to the individual but are not necessarily shared with others.
Imagine a couple on top of a mountain looking at a sunset panorama about them. The fact that they are both looking at the sun sinking behind the distant mountains and seeing the shadows begin to darken the valley below them is something they are both experiencing in a common way. One of them may feel a sense of loneliness, a sense of panic within whilst the other may be almost tearful at the beauty unfolding before them. Each reaction is real to the individual but is not shared. It is personally real to them. It is a ‘Personal Reality’.
Personal Realities are constructed by the individual and although they may be affected by external influences the individual is responsible for them. When the Personal Reality has been structured by the client in a well balanced way it will work well for the individual. However when it is structured in a flawed manner the client will experience ‘issues’ as a result.
The Paradigmatic Coach works with the client to identify the communication strategies the individual is using to create their Personal Realities. The client is then coached to use more effective strategies to generate a Paradigm Shift in these realities. This ‘shift’ enables the client to discover and explore options as regards their Personal Realities and therefore make change possible.
How is a session run
Paradigmatic Coaching is a ‘Talking Intervention Plus’. During a session the coach will use linguistic tools to work with the client. Techniques based on hypnotherapeutic relaxation and Emotional Freedom Technique are also used to assist with emotional ‘spikes’ that may be experienced. Each session is client led, so that the pace and intensity will be directly controlled by them. This ensures that all sessions are ‘safe’ for the individual involved.
Sessions are normally one to one with the client although group sessions are extremely effective in certain circumstances.
Who can benefit?
Much of the world around us is experienced as a ‘Personal Reality’. Therefore Paradigmatic Coaching may be used to assist in creating a more efficient Personal Reality in any sphere of an individual’s life. It may be work related, involve emotional issues or be belief based.
Paradigmatic Coaching has proven extremely effective in dealing with issues related to an officer’s direct involvement in shooting incidents. It has also assisted those officers experiencing stress due to non firearms situations as well as helping their partners and families with issues directly or indirectly related to the police service.
Other benefits of Paradigmatic Coaching
Paradigmatic Coaching provides an intervention that is quick and safe. It gives the client the opportunity to deal with issues that may be having a detrimental effect on them at home or at work.
It provides an additional intervention option for the individual or organisation where more formal and expensive counselling was once seen as the only choice.
Paradigmatic Coaching works well in collaboration with counselling. After this ‘First Stage Intervention’ the client is in a better position to decide whether counselling is needed.
