Oct 14 2011

POLICE have been praised for saving the life of a man who was slashing himself with a knife in the middle of a Warwick street.

Shocked residents in Landor Street, Warwick, looked on in horror as the 35-year-old man injured his head, chest and throat with the weapon on Saturday afternoon.

Officers called out at about 4pm brought the incident to a safe conclusion by using a Taser gun to stop the man from injuring himself further after attempts to negotiate the knife from him failed.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “The man was saved from certain death by the officers.

"I saw them in action from my house and cannot praise them enough.

“The officers were so professional.

“The heli-med (air ambulance) and paramedics were also there and were also fantastic.

“In these times where they seem to be battling for recognition from the government for the dangerous situations they face daily, I don’t know how these officers continue to do what they do.

“Too often they get bad press, but on this occasion they were awesome and a credit to the force, while being under immense pressure and stress from a horrific situation that was being witnessed by lots of the local residents.”

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said the man was taken to hospital following the incident and is continuing to receive treatment.
